About Real Dharma

Real Dharma is an open and non-sectarian group for meditation and inquiry, dedicated to awakening to our true nature. We explore the essence of nondual awakening as present awareness and insight, freely available to everyone, without the need for recourse to dogma or ritual. We usually meet weekly for a short period of meditation, followed by teachings and discussion. Our group is varied and open to everyone, beginners and experienced spiritual aspirants alike. All are welcome!

We are led by Hal Blacker, a Buddhist lineage holder and ordained teacher (ordained by Tibetan lama Anam Thubten), as well as a teacher and student of Advaita Vedanta. Hal draws on the essence of nondual wisdom traditions, but communicates from the heart, in a way that is contemporary, simple, and direct.

Nondual, or nonduality, means “not two.” These words point to the basic and intrinsic natural state of freedom, clarity and peace that is knowable beyond words. We are inspired  by the great Buddhist nondual  teachings of Prajnaparamita, Dzogchen and Mahamudra, as well as the Hindu tradition of Advaita Vedanta.

Hal Blacker has been a student of Buddhism and other nondual traditions for over 35 years. He was asked to teach by Nyingmapa Tibetan lama Anam Thubten. Near the same time, his teacher of Advaita Vedanta, an important Hindu nondual tradition, also suggested to Hal that he teach.

Nonsectarian, non-authoritarian and non-dogmatic, we draw from the wisdom teachings of those who have awakened in the past, yet attempt to express the essence of awakening  in a manner that is simple, contemporary and direct.

We meet most Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. for meditation, teachings, dialogue and discussion at The Common Well, Kiva Room, 85 Bolinas Rd., # 8, Fairfax, CA 94930. (Across from Bolinas Park, and behind the building housing Yoga Mountain Studio and Casa Manana.  Left side of the building, around the back and down the hallway that is next to “Living Medicine.” Look for signs for The Common Well and Real Dharma).
